To squirrel away Means: to put (smthg) in a safe or secret place especially so that it can be kept for future use (like a squirrel collects nuts for the winter) EXAMPLE1: She squirrelled away money from her paycheck each month to buy a new car EXAMPLE2: Lots of  kids squirrelled away their halloween candy in a safe spot so they can eat it in future days
